Five Reasons Why the Prama Wellness Method Works
by Ramesh Bjonnes
Holistic health and healing have become household words. But what do these terms really mean? If you have high cholesterol and take an herb to improve liver function and another to reduce cholesterol, does that mean you are practicing holistic health? At Prama, we certainly advice people to use herbs as part of their overall health program, but we do not think that just taking herbs is the only, or even the best, solution.
Our Prama Wellness Method utilizes a combination of health practices that work together to achieve optimum health. Here are five reasons why this holistic approach is effective:
- Taking an herbal pill is not necessarily practicing holistic health. If you have acid reflux, doctors often prescribe medication to reduce acidity. An herbalist might prescribe Aloe Vera juice or potato water for the same purpose. But will these methods cure the acid reflux? Not really–they will simply reduce the symptoms. Instead, the underlying cause of acid reflux, rather than the symptoms, needs to be addressed. So, if the underlying cause is a diet high on pizza and ice-cream and low on fruits and vegetables, then a more holistic solution would be to reduce those foods causing the problem. In other words, herbs can be part of a short-term solution, but for long-lasting health, we usually need to change the habits that caused the problem in the first place. That’s the motto here at Prama.
- A juice fast is an important part of good health, but not always enough. We practice juice fasting at our wellness retreats because it is amazingly good for both physical and mental health. Many scientific studies have corroborated our experience over the years. But that does not mean we think juice fasting can solve everything. For good health, we also promote yoga, meditation, cardio exercise, and a high nutrient dense diet rich in vegetables and fruits. We have seen that those who incorporate regular juice fasting with all of these other habits will do the best in turning their health around.
- We work with doctors whenever necessary, and we support getting regular health check-ups. Being overly dependent on pharmaceutical medication without trying to address the underlying causes of our health problems is not the best for our health. But that does not mean we should stop seeing our physician. Rather, our doctor can be an integral part of our overall holistic health program. At Prama, we take advantage of both worlds.
- Good digestion is key to good health. Many of the people visiting Prama have digestive issues. All natural health systems teach us that bad digestion first reduces vitality, then the immune system. This may have devastating effects on our overall health. That is why we put so much emphasis on developing healthy digestion through a combination herbs, optimum nutrition, cleansing, exercise, and relaxation through yoga and meditation. Again, it is the synergistic use of these methods that will bring long term, holistic success.
- If you suffer from any kind of addiction, then we advise you to seek counseling. Yes, good diet and regular juice fasting are important for long term health. But that may be difficult to achieve on a regular basis if someone suffers from addiction to food or has certain unhealthy food cravings. In that case, we recommend that you seek counseling in dealing with the addiction while you continue working on better lifestyle habits as per the Prama Wellness Method. Seeking help from a variety of professional sources as per need is another secret ingredient in our holistic model.
