PREVIOUS KIIRTAN RETREATS
WHAT TO EXPECT
Akhanda Kirtan
Akhanda means “endless”, so this type of kirtan format focuses on continuing the chant in an unbroken chain for a selected period of time. In the case of this retreat we will likely have a few 3 hour Akhanda Kirtans depending on the number of people present. Akhanda Kirtan is done in a counter clockwise circular motion around a puja table. This movement symbolizes the movement of the devotee moving ever closer to the Cosmic Nucleus. Participants are encouraged to move together with the simple dance Lalita Marmika.
Avartta Kirtan
Practiced later in the evening and in the sweetest way possible, Avartta Kirtan continues to be one of the most popular kirtan formats. This kirtan is done by successively facing six directions – east, west, north, south, up and down with six different melodies that reflect the different ideations used for each direction. The ideations are:
1. – I am completely obedient to Parama Purusa.
2. – I have tremendous love for Parama Purusa.
3. – My mind is purified in the fire of devotion.
4. – I am removing my external and mental obstacles.
5. – O lord, take me on your lap.
6. – I surrender everything I have for you.
Sadhana Shivir
Sadhana Shivir combines kirtan with silent meditation by alternating between 30 minutes of kirtan and 30 minutes of silent meditation. This is a great way to experience the depth of a prolonged meditation for those who have trouble sitting for extended periods of time. The kirtan and sadhana are alternated 3 times meaning the total time is 3 hours.
