Almost every day, I receive articles in my inbox claiming how various herbs can heal us, especially herbs that can cure inflammation. Herbs can support the healing of inflammation, but in my work, I have learned that they are secondary to more profound lifestyle changes, especially diet- and fasting-centered detox, combined with yoga and meditation. Inflammation is a systemic, lifestyle-driven condition that cannot be reversed by “one single, natural agent” alone, even in high doses.
Herbs as helpers, not primary cure
Herbs, spices, and specific plant compounds (such as anti-inflammatory juices and botanicals) are essential parts of our diet and lifestyle. But over the years, I have learned to see them not as quick cures, but as part of a broader healing strategy. Trying to fix chronic problems with a single or a few supplements or herbs, even a few powerful ones, usually fails because the underlying inflammatory landscape remains unchanged.
Inflammation as a lifestyle disease
Scientific studies have shown that inflammation is a “silent” and systemic process tied to years of poor diet, stress, and toxic load, linking it to a wide range of chronic conditions. Because this process develops over time through repeated lifestyle insults, sustainable healing must likewise be systemic—changing what and how we eat, how we rest, and how we manage stress—rather than expecting quick relief from any pill, natural or synthetic.
Central role of diet change
At Prama, we emphasize that an anti-inflammatory, largely plant-based, alkaline-forming diet is foundational for reversing chronic inflammation. Guests with inflammatory conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis) have seen dramatic reductions in inflammatory markers after a period on carefully designed cleansing and anti-inflammatory diets, showing that changing the overall dietary pattern shifts the body’s baseline, not herbs in isolation.
Fasting as the key lever
Juice fasting and intermittent fasting are among the most powerful tools for reducing inflammation because they trigger detoxification, lower oxidative stress, and reset metabolic and inflammatory pathways. Both in my personal life and in retreat case histories that extended juice cleanses—5 to 21 days, combined with rest and practice—I have seen long-lasting remission of chronic inflammatory symptoms that had not yielded to ordinary supplementation.
Yoga, meditation, lifestyle, and inner ecology
In the broader Yoga–Ayurveda-Naturopathy framework, health is the alignment of body, mind, and environment, which cannot be achieved by adding a few herbs on top of an already inflammatory lifestyle. Thus, we need to integrate herbs and spices into a plant-based, dosha-balancing routine that includes a whole-food diet, fasting, sunlight, movement, yoga, and meditation. Herbs are indeed not enough; an integrated lifestyle change, that may include certain herbs, is needed to transform the inflammatory “soil” in which disease tends to grow.

Food and Fasting for Healing and Health
by Ramesh Bjonnes | Sep 9, 2026
If the body naturally detoxes every day, even while we sleep, why is it still important to detox with a juice cleanse or alkaline superfoods? Because the food we eat is not always healthy or alkaline; it may contain too much acid-producing processed flour, sugar, animal fat, and dairy. When we overeat, too many toxins are left in the body. Stress is another reason; too much work and too little sleep will create imbalances in the body’s digestive ecology.

What’s Really Behind Your Toxic Load?

Scientists have found that microbiomes are essential in shaping the development of innate and adaptive immunity and, in turn, the immune system shapes the microbiome.
So how can we improve our microbiome, which is primarily located in the gut, and thus improve our immune system?
