Ayurveda and Juice Cleansing

We do not normally associate juice cleansing with Ayurveda, but this ancient system of healing can offer helpful tips to enhance your cleansing experience. The studies on fasting by Dr. Yoshinori Ohsu, who won the Nobel prize in 2016, has shown that fasting induces a breakdown and clean-up of toxic cells and debris.1

Research has shown that cells live longer, and the mitochondria in the cells create more energy in times of fasting, or calorie restriction, compared to when eating regularly.2,3 Other studies suggest that regular fasting or calorie restriction, such as during intermittent fasting, (without starvation) can naturally prolong and improve the aging process in numerous ways.

In Ayurveda, spring and fall cleanses are common, as well as food restriction during the 7-day panchakarma treatments, as well as for one day fasts during Ekadashi, the 11th day of each half month. During this time, the lunar pull on liquids in the body is strong, thus inducing toxic elimination through feces, sweat, and urine.

In Ayurvedic terms cleansing helps in the breakdown of ama, or toxins in the body, when we abstain from food for short periods, such as during panchakarma, a 7-day ayurvedic healing program. Dr. John Douillard, a well-known Ayurvedic practitioner, has developed different cleansing regimens adopting ayurvedic principles.

Ayurveda can also complement juice cleansing in several ways, offering a personalized holistic approach to detoxification and health optimization. Here’s how some basic Ayurvedic principles can enhance a juice cleansing experience:

Dosha-Specific Juicing*

Ayurveda recognizes three primary doshas (energies) that govern our bodies: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Tailoring juice recipes to balance these doshas can maximize the benefits of cleansing:

  • For Vata: Focus on warm, sweet, and grounding juices like carrot, beet, and sweet potato.
  • For Pitta: Incorporate cooling and bitter juices such as cucumber, leafy greens, and aloe vera.
  • For Kapha: Use stimulating and light juices with ginger, leafy greens, and astringent fruits.

Incorporating Ayurvedic Herbs

Ayurvedic herbs can be added to juices to enhance their therapeutic effects:

  • Triphala: aids in detoxification and supports digestive health.
  • Ashwagandha: helps manage stress and boosts immunity during fasting, pacifies vata.
  • Turmeric: offers anti-inflammatory properties and supports liver function.
  • Ginger: reduces kapha.
  • Fennel, coriander, cumin: good for gas and nausea.

Mindful Consumption

Ayurveda emphasizes mindful eating, which can be applied to juice cleansing in these ways:

  • Consume juices at room temperature or slightly warm to support digestion.
  • Sip juices slowly and mindfully, or “eat” the juice like a soup with a spoon, focusing on the taste and sensations.
  • Follow a regular schedule for juice consumption, aligning with natural circadian rhythms.

Cleansing Practices

Ayurveda offers additional cleansing practices that can complement juice cleansing:

  • Tongue scraping: Removes toxins accumulated on the tongue during cleansing.
  • Oil pulling Supports oral health and aids in overall detoxification
  • Abhyanga (self-massage): Stimulates lymphatic flow and aids in toxin elimination.
  • Medicated enemas with herbs, such as licorice for bowl inflammation.

Post-Fast Transition

Ayurveda provides guidance for breaking a juice cleanse:

  • Gradually introduce solid foods, starting with easily digestible options like warm fruit compote with ginger for breakfast, or kitchari (a light mixture of rice and mung beans with leafy green vegetables) for the lunch meal.
  • Focus on warming, nourishing foods to rebuild strength and support digestion.
  • Incorporate digestive spices like cumin, coriander, and fennel to ease the transition.

Balancing Agni (Digestive Fire)

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of maintaining a strong digestive fire (agni) during and after cleansing:

  • Include ginger or other warming spices in juices to stimulate digestion.
  • Consider sipping warm water or herbal teas between juice servings to support agni.
  • Avoid excessive cold or raw juices, which can dampen the digestive fire.
  • Use warm vegetable broth instead of juice for some of the “meals” in the cold season.

By integrating these Ayurvedic principles, juice cleansing can become a more balanced and personalized experience, potentially enhancing its detoxifying and rejuvenating effects.

Food and Fasting for Healing and Health

Food and Fasting for Healing and Health

If the body naturally detoxes every day, even while we sleep, why is it still important to detox with a juice cleanse or alkaline superfoods? Because the food we eat is not always healthy or alkaline; it may contain too much acid-producing processed flour, sugar, animal fat, and dairy. When we overeat, too many toxins are left in the body. Stress is another reason; too much work and too little sleep will create imbalances in the body’s digestive ecology.
